Yohana wins Commodore’s boat race

The first locally made Seaward defence boat commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in Lagos.

It was pomp and pageantry at the Navy Sailing Club as eight boats and thirteen sailors were vying for the golden trophy in the 2014 Commodore’s Boat Race.

The race began at the Club’s jetty in Ojo and terminated at Ibeshe beach with Denise Yohanna emerged the overall winner.

“It’s my first race in 2 years,” Yohanna said, adding, “I surprised myself because I have been away from sailing since 2012. But I give thanks to God for this victory.”

There was also a boat cruise which saw a lot of guests and journalist take part. “It was an afternoon to remember,” Stella Bamawo of the Nation’s Newspapers told this reporter after the cruise.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Canoeing, Rowing and Sailing Federation( NCRSF) has finally taken delivery of six boats which were impounded by the Customs for over seven years.

According to the Vice-President of the Federation, Dr. Isaac Mankilik, this was indeed an added advantage towards Nigeria’s preparation for the 2016 Olympics slated for Rio, Brazil.

He said: “Very soon we are going to have additional boats, and if you have been following events in the Federation, we were able to clear six boats that had been in the port for the past seven or eight years. Recently we cleared them and they have given us a boost to the fleet we have for training. A number of our athletes went to Germany and to Scotland, and took part in international events with medals.”
