The world wide campaign ‘Meat Free Monday’ is still to arrive in Nigeria. Even though our country is equally and in many parts severely affected by climate change.

The campaign is supported by Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney who wrote the song ‘Meat Free Monday / It’s a fun day”. Through a meat free day climate change should be slowed, says the ex-Beatle.

Pop star has been for long promoting a global Veggie Day. For this purpose, the vegetarian Ex-Beatle has now released a video for the song “Meat Free Monday”. 65-year-old model-legend Twiggy also appears in the video.

Photo contributions from all over world by ‘Meat Free Monday’ participants are the basis of the video.

The clip came just before the New York climate summit of the United Nations. On 23 September the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon held a Climate Summit in New York.

Ban Ki-moon was looking for “bold commitments and actions that will catalyse transformative change”, ahead of the crucial Paris Climate Treaty conference next year. Through a meat free day, emission of greenhouse gases is reduced and climate change will slow down.

Global leaders are urged to act, but everyone can play a small part to make a big difference. The ‘Meat Free Monday’ is a simple but effective idea on the table – simply a weekly meat free day.

Meat production creates harmful greenhouse gases and requires increasingly unsustainable levels of precious resources including land, water and energy.

It is a major contributor towards global environmental degradation and climate change.

Adopting a plant-based diet for one day each week is a simple but significant environmental action that everyone can take, with the added benefit of improved health. Skipping meat for one day a week can reduce your annual carbon footprint by as much as not driving your car for a whole month.

Meat production is responsible for 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, with some scientists saying the percentage is higher.

An area of Amazon rainforest the size of a hundred football pitches is cut down every hour to create room for grazing cattle.   The ‘Meat Free Monday’ campaign in Nigeria will be officially launched at the Lagos Veg Fest (October 10-12 in Freedom Park, Island)
