Awka—Zone 5 of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, comprising Anambra, Edo and Delta, said yesterday that it prosecuted 519 traffic offenders through its special mobile courts in the three states in August this year.

The zonal commander of FRSC, Mr. Nseobong Akpabio, said in Onitsha yesterday, that of the 519 traffic offenders prosecuted for various traffic offences, 471 were convicted while 48 were discharged.

Akpabio said during his routine monitoring on the Benin-Asaba-Onitsha road corridor patrol operations that the motorists were prosecuted for various offences, ranging from dangerous driving, speed limit violation, use of phone while driving and driving with worn out tyres.

Other offences included driving with expired driver licences and expired vehicle documents, overloading violation, among others.
He explained that a mobile court to try offenders had been established in collaboration with the judiciary, in an effort to instill discipline and restore sanity in the minds of motorists towards reducing road traffic crashes.

According to him, the special mobile courts sat along specific traffic corridors of Benin-Agbor; Issele-Uku-Asaba; Asaba-Agbor; Benin-Auchi; Benin-Ore and Benin-Sapele highways. Others are Sapele-Warri; Warri-Ugheli; Abraka-Umutum; Ihiala-Onitsha and Ihiala-Owerri highways.

The zonal commander said  the corps would continue to improve on its operations to meet up with FRSC 2014 strategic goals towards reducing road traffic crash by 15 per cent and fatality by 25 per cent.
