No fewer than 2000 ex-militants from Delta, Edo and Ondo states thronged the streets of Bomadi, Delta State, yesterday, to protest the proposed creation of 21,000 polling units in the North against 8,000 for Southern Nigeria by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.

The protesting ex-militants, some of who had placards reading “Jega must go,’ ‘We will never ascribe to that number,’ ‘Jega perpetrating northern agenda,’ ‘We call on the National Assembly to call Jega to order,’ among others, urged President Goodluck Jonathan and the Senate President, David Mark, to sack Professor Attahiru Jega, the INEC boss.

The Co-ordinator of the ex-militants, who is also the Chairman Delta branch phase three Presidential Amnesty Programme, Mr. Preye Ekpebide, said Jega had contravened Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution and also violated his oath of office and as such cannot be the umpire of the nation’s electoral body.

Recalling the allocation of polling units to Abuja and North-West region, which comparatively surpassed those of South-East region and the entire South-South, he said that Jega’s intent was to politically reduce the South and make the North dominant.

He said: “It is a calculated attempt to hatch the Northern agenda to undo President Jonathan in the 2015 general elections. We are not going to fold our hands and watched this day light robbery to happen.”

Ekpebide called on the presidency and the National Assembly to ask Jega to jettison the proposed creation of polling units or create equal polling units to avoid mass protests.

The ex-warlords promised to work with Ndigbo youths and the Oduduwa Peoples Congress to organise a mass rally against INEC on the new polling units.
