…Reject his Bill aimed at regulating  tenure of varsity dons

Asaba—Delta State House of Assembly, yesterday, ordered the Clerk of the House to return back the bill from the state governor seeking to regulate the tenure and retirement age of Professors and other staff of state Universities.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, had sent an Executive Bill to the House, seeking to peg the retirement age of staff of the state-owned tertiary institutions, but it did not scale through second reading.

When the Bill slated in the Order Paper was read out by the Clerk, the Speaker, Mr. Peter Onwusanya ruled that the Clerk should return it to the governor since there was no such law in the state, noting “For any amendment to take place, there should be existing principal law to that effect.”
The Bill, had sought to provide that “From the commencement of this law, the compulsory retiring age of any staff of the university who has attained the status of a Professor shall be 70 years”.
