Members of Lagos State House of Assembly, have condemned the recommendation by the National Conference delegates for the creation of more states in the country, saying it is unnecessary and a waste of resources.
The lawmakers representing Ojo 2 and Alimosho 1 constituencies, Lanre Ogunyemi and Bisi Yusuf, respectively, insisted the creation of more states would compound the country’s problems.
According to Ogunyemi, who is the chairman House Committee on Energy: “Why must we compound the problem of the country by creating more states? Except for a few states with natural resources, other states have been struggling to survive.
“The question should be, ‘how have we brought our nation out of the woods economically, and how have we provided employment for our people?’
“Electricity generation is comatose; most states cannot fend for themselves without federal allocations. Why would anyone add to the problems of the country? Some states cannot even pay staff salaries, most universities have become glorified secondary schools.
In his contribution, Bisi Yusuf, who is the chairman House Committee on Transportation, Commerce and Industry, said: “Rather than creating more states, what the country needs is a purposeful and sound leadership that would manage its resources effectively.
“How many of the existing states are viable? We do not need more states because we have not been able to take adequate care of the ones.”
