As the minutes tick towards the kick off of the highest ranked Scrabble Competition in the world, the Godswill Akpabio International Scrabble Classics, the host Association has confirmed the arrival in Uyo of the 24 custom-made trophies and medals in all the categories even as the Five Star Le meridian Hotel venue of the Classics has been confirmed.

Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Scrabble Association Mr Ufot Ebong said weekend that this being the Eight edition, quality and standards cannot be compromised. “In association with the national body, do not forget that this is the eight time we are hosting this event and it keeps on improving by the year. This year will definitely be better.

‘’We have taken delivery of the 24 trophies and medals that will be presented to the different categories of winners and are set to roll….”

He also spoke on the 7 committees set up by his Association and expressed satisfaction with what they have achieved so far. “ it boils down to what I said earlier. The men and women working with us come to the table with lots of experience garnered over the years.

“We have committees to handle accommodation, equipment, protocol, entertainment, transportation, and so on, while the national body is responsible for Prizes, publicity, technical and WESPA representation. This is an international tourney and nothing will be left to chance “ he said.

On his part, Board member and chairman of the Technical sub committee, Mr Umar Faruk Baba-Inna has confirmed the closure of registration. “ Yes it ended last Friday. We are in the process of collation and by Monday ( today ) we will give you the number of entries in all  the categories and the total number. Some registered on line, others by mail, while some still, did through the state body, so we will put all together. We are good to go…” he confirmed.

The 8th Godswill Akapbio International Scrabble Classics will be declared open by His Excellency Governor Godswill Akpabio on Thursday, September 24, 2014. The Governor, a versatile scrabble player has the tradition of taking on the World Champions and beating them on opening day.
