FOLLOWING widespread condemnation of deployment of military and other unconventional security agencies to Osun State ahead of today’s governorship election by the Federal Government, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Paulinus Nwagu, has explained that the action was due to current insurgency ravaging the country.

Nwagu said government’s action was aimed at preventing insurgents from taking advantage of the exercise to launch attacks on the large number of people that will throng the various voting centres to exercise their franchise.

Speaking at a media briefing, Friday, in Abuja, Senator Nwagu, who represents Ebonyi Central Senatorial zone at the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, said: “The military are deployed when we envisage that there is going to be a serious crisis in a particular place or state. They are deployed to a place based on what the government envisages in that particular place.

“If you had heard Mr President during the campaign rally in Osun State, you would also agree with me that he made a categorical statement based on why the election will be free and fair and I believe that militarilising Nigerians is because of the insurgency.”
