WARRI— PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has assured stakeholders of Federal Government’s commitment to ensure that the bill to professionalise environment practice becomes law.

The President gave the assurance at the just concluded three days 24th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Environmental Society, NES, in Warri, Delta State.

Represented by Mrs Laurentia Laraba, Minister of Environment, Jonathan charged NES to come out with solutions to the myriads of environmental challenges facing the country.

He said: “The impact of floods of about two years ago is still fresh in our minds. Gully erosion in the South-East, oil spillage and land degradation in the Niger Delta region, potential sea encroachment in all the coastal states and desert encroachment in most parts of the North are dangerous.

“However, government is determined and has been working assiduously as part of the transformation agenda in the environmental sector to address all these environmental challenges on the short and long term proactive basis.”

The Bill on Professionalising Environmental Practice in Nigeria, introduced by NES has scaled through the second reading at the National Assembly.

President of NES, Engr. Olu Wai-Ogosu, who appreciated government efforts, pledged members’ continued partnership with government for enlightenment of the masses on how to manage the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.
