ILORIN — Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union, IEDPU, has  called on government to “as a matter of urgent public need, set in motion machinery to recover and mop up small arms and light weapons from the hands of miscreants and block the source of proliferation of these weapons.”

The body which comprises the people in the emirates local governments of Asa, Moro, Ilorin South, Ilorin East and Ilorin West, spoke at a post security summit briefing  in Ilorin.
According to the address jointly signed by the chairman and secretary, Alhaji Abdul Hamid Adi and Alhaji  Hamzat Abdulraheem respectively, the group also stressed the need “for continuous review of the existing laws to meet current security challenges of curbing the activities of criminals to restore the harmonious co-existence in the emirate and in the state at large.”

It equally called on the government “to support National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, with surveillance gadgets and logistics, saying the agency should be encouraged to carry out routine raids on uncompleted buildings, known joints and hideouts of miscreants periodically to apprehend and bring to book those engaged in drug abuse and peddling.”

IEDPU, however, frowned at the over involvement of women of the emirate in politics, claiming it was aiding the breakdown of family values as most of the women had abandoned their major responsibilities in the home front.
It tasked politicians in the emirate “to be re-educated to conduct themselves more decently and keep off from irresponsible show of affluence in the public which instigates crimes and criminalities”
