The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) is set to partner with various arms of the armed forces for the purpose of ensuring that Team Nigeria wins medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.
Team Nigeria recorded a very poor performance at the 2012 Games in London, which led to President Goodluck Jonathan organising a sports retreat in Aso Rock to fashion out modalities to return Nigeria to winning ways at the next Olympics.
And with Rio 2016 Olympics Games just two years away, the body responsible for Nigeria’s participation in international sporting competitions is moving fast to stem the tide of a repeat poor showing at the global stage.
Speaking yesterday in Lagos, President of the NOC, Sani Ndanusa said that in line with President Jonathan’s directive that the Olympic body was partnering various military and para-military bodies in the country to groom athletes that can win medals in Brazil.
Ndanusa said the NOC hinged its decision to reach out to the armed forces because “we all know that they have the facilities and people who are trained in the art of shooting, swimming, boxing and other combat sports, which are multi-medal sports in the Olympics.
