Abuja – Azubuike Egwuekwe, a member of the Super Eagles 30-man provisional list for the 2014 World Cup said on Tuesday in Abuja that Nigeria was capable of lifting the trophy in Brazil.

Egwuekwe who was part of the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning team  in Abuja said that the Eagles were always ready to spring surprises.

He said the Eagles were ready to surprise Nigerians at the 2014 World Cup, the way they did at the 2013 AFCON where nobody gave them a chance to succeed.

“I know that we will get to the semifinals and if we get to the semifinals that means great things are going to happen to Nigeria football; maybe we’ll bring the cup.“

Egwuekwe, who plays for Warri Wolves FC in the Nigeria Professional League, said he would be disappointed if he did not make the final 23-man list of players for the World Cup.

“I will be disappointed, but I always think positive; I am thinking about going to the World Cup.

“My duty is to concentrate on my own game, continue to work hard in training and praying to God. I believe I will make the 23-man list.“

He praised the Stephen Keshi-led coaching crew for its belief in home-based players, saying that the inclusion of five players from the domestic league was a boost for the country’s football.

Egwuekwe was also among the home-based Super Eagles that won bronze at the 2014 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) held in South Africa. (NAN)
