Girl-child education: Satellite Central Lions Club upgrades learning

By DOTUN IBIWOYE

The learning environment of the girl-child students goes a long way in affecting their focus , assimilation and also hold the key to the well being of their families, neighbourhoods and nation.

If given quality basic education, and skills the confidence and befitting place to learn, their contributions to the society will be multiplied in many folds and the Satellite Cental Lions Club recently renovated a school in Lagos.

The amazon behind the renovation was the 2013-2014 President of the Club, Lion Muna Anozia and her Club Members of Lions Club who left no stones unturned in giving succour to the students.

Hitherto, Fazil Omar Ahmadiyah (FOA) Nursery and Primary School 3 located at Okokomaiko Lagos, needed complete facelift. Hence the Club decided to take it as a project in order to make the school suitable for learning.

According to her: “Once you become the President of your club, you look for a core project to carry out. Therefore I visited FOA School 3, saw that it was in utter disrepair, an environment not conducive for learning. I and my members adopted this project for children irrespective of whether or not they are of privileged background.

“We are happy that we have been able to touch lives. We have plans for other interventions such as eye screening, diabetes screening, and care for old people, the deaf and dumb so on.

For example, we have the Lions Youth Outreach Program which we believe is ‘Changing Tomorrow Today’. This is to help and challenge youth to learn, to achieve and to serve.

There is also the annual Peace Poster Contest where students of secondary schools exercise their creative minds through paintings.

During this Lions Year, Lions encourage reading habit through visits to improved libraries. Also by providing books and allocating time for students to read at all times, children are urged to imbibe reading.

At the National or local level, Lions Club organisze quiz competitions. We believe this will expose children to be creative  and be original at discussing topics concerning their environment and world issues

All of what I have analyzed are done purely on charity basis depending on the funds we have available. Most of the funds however come through donations at our annual investitures of Presidents and other officers of the club.
