Algeria on Wednesday condemned what it described as “the unjustified death’’ of several Malian government officials in the northern city of Kidal.

The Algerian authorities had therefore sought for “clarification’’ from Bamako over the assassinations.

“Algeria condemns in particular the unjustified death of several Malian officials in circumstances requiring clarification in accordance with the laws in force,’’ Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra was quoted as saying.

He said that Algeria “calls for calm and restraint, and urges all parties to avoid any act that would feed the escalation of tension and violence.’’

“Algeria is committed to help and support this brotherly and neighbouring nation, to enter a new stage ahead of launching a comprehensive dialogue between the Malians within their country,’’ the minister added.

Eight people, including six government officials and two civilians, were assassinated by gunmen in Kidal on Saturday and Sunday, while Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara was visiting the city.

Over the weekend, Mali’s separatist Tuareg rebels reportedly launched an assault on Kidal, which was seen as a “declaration of war” on the Malian government.

The fighting began on Saturday and continued throughout the day between the Malian army and the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, who wanted to prevent Mara’s arrival.

The UN Mission in Mali has reported that the situation in northern Mali is still tense, although a cease-fire deal brokered by the UN Mission seems to remain in place. (Xinhua/NAN)
