Steady power in next 10 yrs’

It was truly  theoretical, when the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC,  Dr. Sam Amadi stated in a media chat that “since other forms of operations had failed, privatisation is the best policy Nigeria can ever embark on that will bring about positive result”.

Among the aggrieved  consumers is Mrs.Oyewole Adeola, who stressed how the poor service of the new owners crumbled her frozen foods business worth hundreds of thousands within two months, leaving her starting over again.

In her words, “I am yet to see when the power sector would truly experience an effective reform as promised by the federal government since the 60s  because most small scale enterprises depend highly on electricity to survive but instead of it getting better  under the reform, its decadence is unspeakable.

After I retired from the banking sector, I felt engaging in a small scale business was my best option but the new owners of PHCN rubbished my efforts with their very poor service. All my frozen foods get rotten due to lack of electricity,” she lamented.

The boss of  NERC in an interview assured Nigerians of better days ahead, based on the new policies on ground. In his words,

“ We are already getting there. If presently, we are operating on 2000MW, that simply means we started the operation three to four years ago. So you won’t see the result of the one we are doing today until the next three to four years.

Geometric  power is now operational but they were stagnant. It was the frame work of Jonathan’s administration that  fast- tracked their effort. What that means is that in a couple of years,  new generating plants would be constructed by the companies licensed  by NERC to effect operations,” stated Amadi.

Dr. Amadi further  revealed that the reason behind the epileptic power supply experienced by Nigerians was because the system was not well structured .

He assured Nigerians of enjoying steady power supply in the next 10years. “In the next 10years, we should be talking about multiple of  tens of  thousands of mega watts and even more as there will be geometric increase” he affirmed.
