By Amaka Abayomi

The Director-General of the National Mathematical Centre, NMC, Abuja, Professor Adewale Solarin, has said the centre will grant the top scorer in the junior category of the National Secondary School Mathematics Competition, NASSMAC, scholarship into the NMC Model International Academy, while the top scorer in the senior category who is willing to study mathematics in the university would be awarded scholarship.

Solarin disclosed this at the flag-off of the 2014 NASSMAC competition aimed at awakening the consciousness and interest of secondary school students in Mathematics.
Imploring other private organisations to partner with the Federal Government and promote the study and interest in Mathematics as a subject, Solarin said the final top students in the maths competition would gain automatic invitation to the annual Maths Olympiad trainings.

“The NMC is willing to organise Olympiad trainings for teachers of junior and senior categories winners while schools of the best three students would get 100 NMC branded rubic cubes, branded textbooks and Maths Olympiad textbooks.”

Describing the processes involved in participating in the competition, the Category Manager, Brands, Promasidor Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Inawo Abiola said that the competition is open to all students between 10 – 18 years of age in JSS3 and SS2, in any government approved school in Nigeria.

“The best three students in both categories will represent their schools, and schools that intend to participate can obtain forms from www.promasidor-ng.com, the headquarters or regional offices nationwide.”
The properly filled forms must be stamped and signed by the school principal and must be presented by the student to the officials at the examination centre on the examination day.

The first stage of the examination will hold on March 15, 2014, in 200 centres across Nigeria. Students with the highest scores in both categories will move to the second and final stage examination which will produce national prize winners.
