Graveyard silence as community alleges monarch’s imposition

By OLASUNKANMI AKONI

There is a graveyard silence in Igbobi-Sabe area of Yaba Local Council Development Area, as residents of the area who earlier protested what they termed  imposition of a traditional ruler in the area are intimidated with heavy presence of soldiers and policemen.

The aggrieved residents, last week, stormed the state House of Assembly over allegation of imposition of one Mr. Adeyemi Bakare, as a candidate for the post of an Oba as against the wish of the people who wanted Ademola Salami.

Leading the protesters to the Assembly was the former member of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Bashiru Fashina, who said Bakare was not a popular candidate the community wanted as their next Oba.

According to him; “24 hours ago (last Thursday) it came to our knowledge that a neutral person who the community does not know was chosen and to be coronated tomorrow Saturday November 30th”. 2013.”

The former Lawmaker, implored the House to  stop the coronation to forestall breakdown of  peace and tranquility in the area.

The protesters in their numbers carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “We no go gree”, “We don’t want Bakare as our Oba”, “Ademola Salami is our Candidate”, “Assembly should save us from this imposition”, among others.

Addressing the aggrieved protesters, Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security, Strategy and Publicity, Hon. Segun Olulade assured the protesters that the House would look into their plight with a view to bringing peace to the community.

He however, promised that all concerned parties would be invited to the House for proper investigations.
