What is better than fighting cancer?

Each day we’re reading and hearing about cancer: Breast cancer is defeated again, colon cancer has found its enemy, lung cancer can be early discovered, new methods in curing cancer, etc, but what we’re most of all interested in, if we do not suffer from this terrible disease, is to learn how to avoid it.
We should be concerned in preventing this disease, as it has been shown that, though people with family history are more prone to getting sick, even the ones with no medical history at all can develop one form or another. Instead of hoping to never get sick, we should focus on doing everything possible to prevent getting sick, either talking about cancer, or any other type of disease, which can bring just as much suffering.

Exercise
The mother of all preventing methods is exercising. Practicing any sport, jogging, gymnastics, or even Pilates can help; we just have to keep on moving.  A healthy body will fight any disease harder and definitely with much more success; while a good and strong immune system can fight any virus.
Even since antiquity, people knew that working out is good, the ancient Greeks and Romans transformed exercises into big events, promoting the healthy body as the best way to look and feel good, but also in order to improve one’s mind and thinking abilities. Just as the Roman Poet, Juvenal puts it, “Mens sana in corpore sano”, means “A healthy mind in a healthy body”. The simplified scientific explanation for this would be that the more you exercise, the more oxygen you get into your blood, and the more oxygen your blood brings to your brain, the better your brain will function. Of course there is more to it, but this explains how all the organs in our body work much better once we work out and give them their precious oxygen.

Diet
Prevention also starts in our plates. Since we are living in the age of fast food, with fries and mayonnaise, we should all know that these foods are cancerous, and the people saying this are not saying it because they want to make anti-commercials to huge corporate businesses, but because it has been proven that these foods are really bad.
We’re the victims of our own taste buds, and we know it but very often try to forget. Besides fast food, even the vegetables we’re buying in our supermarkets can be extremely dangerous, especially since many of them are genetically modified to resist pests, and most of them are sterile fruits and veggies, due to this same modification. They do look better; more coloured, but have in fact almost no nutritional value.

Fruits and vegetables
If you don’t feel like trusting us, trust your taste buds, which will tell you the truth. Naturally obtained fruits and veggies are tasteful, even though less colored and not that big and pretty; while genetically modified ones have surreal colours and taste like cardboard paper. If no vitamins and nutrients enter our body, how do we imagine our body can fight any disease, even a simple flu?
Buy only locally obtained fruits, and buy small quantities, since real fruits and veggies will not last for weeks, like modified ones do, yet another thing to consider.
Last, but not least, our main ally in protecting ourselves against any unpleasant surprises, and help us detect any abnormality in time, is the regular check-up. It can be annoying, but it can save us a lot of time and especially suffering if we discover any type of cancer in due time. Any type of cancer discovered in its incipient stage has huge chances to be healed, and that makes a visit to the doctor’s office once a year worth the trouble.

Prevention
It is always better to prevent rather than to heal, and these are just a few of the solutions, but they are very important, since they help us fight any type of disease, prolonging our life, and making our lives a lot easier.
A healthy body will keep our minds sharp even with old age, less pains and aches are very important, especially after a certain age, and a good health will let us enjoy our life as well as our family and friends for a longer period of time. All these make it worth running a few miles, eating a few fruits and thinking positively, believing in a Higher Power and about what we want to do in our lives. To your health!
