Five most deadly EPL teams

Five most deadly EPL teams

In our refreshingly unbeatable style of sports reporting, we present the top five attacking teams in the current English Premier League season.

What we’ve done is look at how many shots each team in the Premier League has taken to score a single goal, and also looked at their shots-on-target ratio.

We’ve then ranked the top five in both categories, put the scores together and hey presto, you’ve got the five most efficient, deadly, clinical – whatever you want to call them – team in the league.

5. Chelsea

Goals: 21

Shots: 207

Shots-per-goal ratio: 9.86

Shots-on-target per-game: 5.8

Unlike many of the other teams on this list, Chelsea haven’t got an established, fully-firing centre-forward that they can rely on. They do however have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to players who can operate just behind a striker, to the point where two-time player of the season Juan Mata can’t get a look in.

Out of our top five, they ranked lowest in terms of the amount of shots it takes them to score a goal (9.86) and 4th overall when it came to having the most accurate shots (5.8).

4. Manchester United

Goals: 20

Shots: 159

Shots-per-goal ratio: 7.95

Shots-on-target per-game: 4.9

Surprisingly for a team containing the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, Manchester United have had the least amount of shots on goal out of our entire top five. They’ve even managed less than Everton, West Brom and Newcastle.

Still, despite that they’ve got a pretty decent goal return (20) from their efforts on goal but also rank lowest in terms of accurate shots-per-game.

3. Liverpool

Goals: 24

Shots: 187

Shots-per-goal: 7.79

Shots-on-target per-game: 6.1

With Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Victor Moses up front, you’re never likely to be short of goals are you?

In the past these two have been amongst the most wasteful strikers in the league but they appear to have clicked at Anfield, and both have nine goals each already this season.

They rank pretty highly in terms of how many shots they take to score a goal and how accurate they are as a team; something sure to stand them in good stead when it comes to handing out the Champions League qualification places at the end of the season.

Goals: 24

Shots: 162

Shots-per-goal: 6.76

Shots-on-target per-game: 5.8

Arsenal have scored the same amount of goals as Liverpool but have done so with slightly fewer shots, thus putting them above their red rivals.

Olivier Giroud is having a sublime second season at the Emirates stadium, while goals are coming from all over the place behind him. Their shots-per-goal ratio is the second best in the league, and it is no mistake that they sit atop the Premier League after 12 games.

Goals: 34

Shots: 206

Shots-per-goal: 6.06

Shots-on-target per-game: 6.8

The Premier League’s top scorers. Lowest shots needed per-goal. Most accurate shots-per-game. You’d be forgiven for thinking that ManchesterCity are running away with the Premier League based on their goal scoring so far.

City have scored in their last 56 home matches in a row, and with new pairing Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero syncing up beautifully since the former’s arrival over the summer, that run is not likely to stop any time soon.

Interestingly, they’ve managed just eight goals on the road compared to 26 at home; thrashing the likes of Newcastle, Manchester United and Tottenham at the Etihad, but stumbling to defeat against the likes of Aston Villa and Sunderland on the road.
