KANO — GOVERNOR Rabiu Kwankaso of Kano State, yesterday, said the state government would establish 1,452 post-literacy learning centres for graduands of the first batch of its basic literacy programme.
Kwankwaso, represented by his deputy, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, made this known at the 2013 International Literacy Day at the Government House, Kano.
He said his administration’s programmes in the areas of adult literacy and non-formal education programmes were all geared towards eradicating all forms of literacy in the state.
The governor who said the state government would also enrol 403,700 learners of basic literacy in the state, added, “There is no way meaningful development can take place in the face of illiteracy.”
Supervising Minister for Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, in his comment said the Federal Government was committed to addressing the low literacy rate and its negative implication in the country.
Wike, who was represented by Hajiya Aishatu Bello, said government’s literacy initiatives was in line with the national development target. He commended the state governor for his giant strides in the education sector.
