Rights commission, Nasarawa Govt to partner on security

Lafia — The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday said it would partner with the Nasarawa State Government to tackle security challenges in the state.

Mrs Tina Nwodu, Director of Conflict, Ethics and Good Governance of the commission, said this while exchanging views with Mr Sani Yakubu-Awa, the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in Lafia.

She said that the commission was concerned about the loss of lives and destruction of properties in the state.

“And we are prepared to partner with the state government to ensure enduring peace and stability.“

She said that crisis caused all kinds of abuses on law-abiding citizens, with children and women being the most affected victims.

Nwodu explained that the group would meet with the community and women leaders, market associations and youth groups to discuss on peace and unity of the people of the state.

“Crisis does not just erupt, it has traces, and early warning responses will assist to get first hand information for it to be nipped in the bud,” she said.

According to Nwodu, peace is priceless, as such, people should imbibe it as no meaningful development can be achieved in any society in an atmosphere of rancour.

The director urged the people of the state to continue to tolerate and live in peace with one another, irrespective of religious, cultural and ethnic differences, adding, “we should be our brothers keepers.

“Peace and unity are veritable tools for national development. So, we must strive to maintain them for the state and indeed Nigeria to move forward,” Nwodu said.

She, however, commended the state for steps taking so far to protect its citizens, and urged the government to do more in averting such crisis in the state.

Responding, the commissioner thanked the commission for coming to identify and sympathise with the state at its trying moment.
