UMUAHIA — SOME portions of the busy Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt express road have again turned into serious death traps barely eight months after the Federal Government rehabilitated it.
Worst affected are portions between Okigwe and Ofeme in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
Dangerous potholes dot most part of this stretch of the road, with no intervention from the Federal Road Management Agency, FERMA.
A number of accidents have occurred on the road as some of these potholes are dangerously located in the centre of the road, which makes it very difficult for motorists to avoid.
Between Okigwe and Ofeme, a number of vehicles, mainly heavy duty trucks, were on Monday seen stranded on some of the damaged portions of the road.
Contract for Okigwe-Umuahia road was announced to have been awarded to a reputable contractor for total rebuilding.
However, since the announcement was made by government, no action had been taken to commence work on the project.
“It does not even seem that the contractor has been mobilized. Since after the announcement, have you hard anything again. I will not be surprised if it turns out to be a political statement afterall we are approaching 2015 election year.”
