Sports has been identified as a good instrument for poverty reduction and the fight against crime in society. Sole Administrator of Okigwe LGA of Imo State, Pastor frank Onwumere, said this while receiving a cup donated by Chief Osita Offormezie for a new football cup competition among all communities in the area.
He said the LGA has now adopted sports as an instrument to help fight youth crime and invigorate poverty alleviation efforts “because it is cheap, efficient and popular.” We have put in place a functional sports policy that will give our youths a sense of belonging.
“This football competion will no doubt boost government effort,” he said. He commended the cup donor for the gesture, stating that “with this competition, sport is going to take a big place in the area noting that “if this was made to be successful , it would compel other philanth-ropists, well meaning indigenes and organis-ations to follow Offormezie’s foot-steps.
On his part, the cup donor said it was intended to help renew sporting rivalry among the youths in all communities noting that “this will also help people of Okigwe regain their pride of place in the sporting world.
Meanwhile youth teams in in the area who have taken up the challenge are bracing up for action ahead of the a new football competition.
