ABUJA — AS part of the activities to mark the 2013 Workers’ Day tomorrow, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, will today flag off 6,000 housing units for workers in the civil and public service to help ease off the perennial accommodation problems Nigerian workers encounter.
National Vice President of NLC, Comrade Promise Adewusi, who disclosed this, weekend, while addressing journalists on the activities marking the 2013 May Day at the Labour House, Abuja, also said that this year’s May Day will be special as it will be part of the activities lined up for the celebration of Nigeria’s 100 years of existence.
Adewusi said: ”The May Day celebration is a joint celebration between the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. This is the May Day before the Centenary Celebration, and it will be special.
“The President of the country, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan will be present, and members of the diplomatic corps willbe part of the celebration.
“The centenary celebration is solely funded by the private sector. All materials for the May Day celebration were produced by local textile companies. The contract was given to those who have unions.
“On Tuesday this week there would be a May Day Symposium at the International Conference Centre, Abuja as a flag-off of the May Celebration, whose chairman is the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Ayim Pius Ayim.
“Three papers will be presented at the symposium, which will be on corruption, 100 years of Nationhood; challenges of development, and Security. While there will be three speakers and five discussants that day.
“Awards would be presented to outstanding Nigerians who have immensely contributed to the development of the country, but it excludes current serving government officials.
“Also, there would be a flag-off of 6,000 housing units across the federation by NLC and TUC by launching a website at the Eagle Square, Abuja where the May Day celebration will take place.
