Jos—As the strike by workers in Plateau State government-owned tertiary institutions enters the fourth week today, they have rejected the setting up of another committee by the state government to look into their grievances.

The Joint Union of Plateau State Owned Tertiary Institutions in a statement, weekend, wondered why another committee was necessary when nothing had been done on the recommendations of a similar committee set up in the past on the same issue.

The statement by the Chairman of the union, Mr. Victor Dawurung, viewed the move as a ploy by government to delay action on their grievances. It also faulted the non-representation of other stakeholders in the nine-member committee.

Dawurung said the workers had gone far with the Collective Bargaining Committee earlier set up by government and faulted the abandonment of the committee to set up another one.

The workers believed that the earlier committee, which facilitated the suspension of the prolonged strike by the workers, should have been allowed to continue with the work.

The state government had, last week, constituted a committee made up of members of the state executive council to look into the grievances of the workers within a month’s time frame.
