Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Ita Okon Bassey Ewa has charged staff of the ministry and its parastatals to improve the quality of lives of Nigerians through the adoption and utilization of appropriate technologies.
He also urged them to promote scientific research for innovation as well as the application of Intellectual Property Rights in Science and Technology.
The minister was speaking during the occasion of the signing of performance contract with staff of the ministry and its parastatals in Abuja.
Professor Ewa said “Permit me to remind you that as a Ministry, we are expected to deliver the following outcomes; Improve the quality of lives of Nigerians through the adoption and utilization of appropriate Technologies, promote scientific research for innovation and technological development, Promote and Protect Intellectual Property Rights in Science and Technology, facilitate the linkages between Industrial Research and Development Outputs and provide necessary regulatory policies and administrative services in the country.
He said that that the ministry had designed an internal assessment and review method to determined how the assigned benchmark for the ministry would be achieved, while the federal government and Nigerians would, by December 2012 assess the ministry to determine its achievements.
Also speaking at the occasion, the Minister of National Planning Commission, represented by the Secretary of the Commission, Ntufan Fidel Ugbo, said that the role of the ministry of Science and Technology in driving the economy of the nation is critical, saying that it was necessary to appoint a coordinating minister for the science and technology ministry to fast tract progress in the science and technology sector.
