Chukwumerije, Isa storm Olympic Village

Team Nigeria camp came alive yesterday as the Captain, Chika Chukwumerije and Isa Mohammed who are Nigeria’s two flagbearers in the Taekwondo events of the London 2012 Olympics stormed the Olympic Village.

The duo with Scribe of Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, Chinedu Ezealah have been criss-crossing Asia where they have been perfecting their acts for medals in Taekwondo .

Chukwumerije, a bronze medallist in Beijing Olympics together with another bronze medallist, Blessing Okagbare are the captain and vice captain respectively of Team Nigeria.

They flew 29 hours from Istanbul, Turkey to London yesterday  Chukwumerije won a gold medal at the 2007 All-Africa Games in the +80kg class and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games soon after.

Although he lost to eventual silver-medal winner Alexandros Nikolaidis in the semifinals of the +80kg event, he claimed the bronze medal after defeating Akmal Irgashev of Uzbekistan, Nigeria’s third medal of the tournament.

His arrival and compatriot Isa Mohammed was celebrated by members of the team as most athletes and officials look up to the taekwondo exponent for a credible performance in London.
