Revelations from subsidy, pension probes disturbing – CIIN

By ROSEMARY ONUOHA
Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, CIIN, has condemned the level of fraud perpetrated by some top government officials in the matter of police pensions, saying that it is highly disturbing.

The Institute said it is also dismayed by the outcome of the probe of the oil subsidy in Nigeria submitted by the adhoc committee of the House of Representatives.

President of the CIIN, Mr. Wole Adetimehin said this during a media parley at the Institutes Secretariat in Lagos last week.

Adetimehin said “The institute has been following with keen interest but dismayed by the outcome of the probe of the oil subsidy in Nigeria as submitted by the adhoc committee of the House of Representatives. Equally disturbing is the revelation of the fraud perpetrated by some top officials in the matter of the police pensions, and wish to categorically condemn all these shameful acts by public officials who should be above board in all their dealings.”

The institute, according to Adetimehin, submits that Nigeria is a potentially great country, but can only be truly great, if all its citizenry, particularly public officers are true to the country.

Adetimehin however said that  that there is still room for more effective policing of Nigeria, against terrorism, kidnapping and armed robbery adding that with success in these areas, it is guaranteed that political and economic development will be enhanced in the country.

His words “The CIIN commends the federal government for tackling the menace of terrorism in Nigeria. There is however room for more effective policing of Nigeria, against terrorism, kidnapping and armed robbery. With success in these areas, it is guaranteed that political and economic development will be enhanced in the country.

Adetimehin noted that the issue of youth restiveness must also be tackled not with force of arms but with creation of jobs and wealth for the great mass of Nigeria who are youths. He said “The government must come up with policies that will take the youths off the streets and put them in schools, vocational centres or in small or medium jobs across the country.”

While decrying the menace of Boko Haram in the country, Adetimehin stated that the menace of Boko Haram should not be fought only as an army of dissent or rebellion, but also as a phenomenon that has its roots in injustice, social inequalities and vagaries of our time. Hence it may not only be about force.
