Oyerinde’s murder, threat to democracy – NLC

BY VICTOR AHIUMA-YOUNG

…As burial holds today in Ede
PRESIDENT of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Mr. Abdulwaheed Omar, yesterday, in Benin City, Edo State, said congress had written to President Goodluck Jonathan, not to allow Edo State trigger what could end the nation’s democracy by prevailing on the security agencies to find the killers of Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, who was killed in Benin City on May 4.

This came as Edo State Government renamed Delta Crescent, the street on which Chief Tony Anenih’s house is located in Benin City after the late Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde.

Late Oyerinde, who was until his murder, the Principal Private Secretary to Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, will be buried today in his home town, Ede, in Osun State.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Council of NLC, has called on the police and other security agencies to do everything possible to fish out Oyerinde’s killers, describing his death as “unacceptable, wicked, malicious, anti – labour and undemocratic.”

Omar, who spoke when he led the council members of industrial unions and Edo workers to commiserate with Governor Oshiomhole on the killing of Olaitan,  said those behind the killing, should know they had killed the highest ranking staff of NLC.

He said: “We have come to join the Edo State council of NLC and  Trade Union Congress, TUC, the organisers of the peaceful protest to present letters to HRM, Oba of Benin, the Director of State Security Service and Commissioner of Police and we received encouraging words from them that the killers will be brought to justice.

“It is our expectation that all these efforts will not go unrewarded. We have come to present a condolence letter to the governor as this is a very serious loss not only to the labour movement but also to Edo people.”

Governor Oshiomhole, in his remark,  noted that he was concerned with the outcome of the investigation because over the years, there had been several murder cases and the killers are still walking the streets free.
