The remains of former Principal Private Secretary to Edo State Governor and notable labour activist, Mr. Olaitan Oyerinde, will be buried in his home town, Ede, Osun State, tomorrow.
Oyerinde, 44, was killed by unknown gunmen in his home in Benin City last weekend. He is survived by his wife, Funke, four children, two sisters and aged parents.
The burial will be preceded by a service of songs at Government House, Benin City, today and his corpse is expected to depart Benin City for Ede in a motorcade at 7am, tomorrow.
Meanwhile, former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has decried political violence in the country, adding that contesting ideas should drive politics in the country.
Tinubu, National leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, in a letter of condolence to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, governor of Edo State, said: “Oyerinde was a hero of justice, freedom and liberty and a towering one at that.”
Meanwhile, the headquarters of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in Abuja was a ghost of itself, yesterday, as most of its principal officers were said to have travelled to Benin, for the funeral proceedings of Oyerinde.
A source at NLC headquarters said the labour leaders would attend a wake-keep for their deceased colleague today in Benin City and proceed to Osun State for the burial tomorrow.
Tinubu said: “That the villains so wickedly cut short his life saddens me, but it equally builds my resolve, our resolve, to continue to fight for the liberation of our people.”
He said though his party wanted power, it would never resort to assassinations and sundry violence.
