Security forces on Friday foiled an attempted jailbreak in an Abidjan prison, with residents reporting heavy gunshots and mobilisation of troops from the Ivorian Republican Force (FRCI) within the courtyard.
The West Africa correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the attempted jailbreak took place at the Ivorian central prison in Abidjan, Maca, which houses most of the political prisoners.
Sources around the prison yard said firing was reported within the premises, but officials refused to confirm the situation.
NAN reports that the UN peacekeeping force and the FRCI, however, moved troops to the area to reinforce security at the prison vicinity.
Sources said some inmates, who had attempted to outwit local guards and run out of the prison, were re-arrested and brought back.
A resident around the prison, who preferred not to be named said: “We heard gunshots and struggling within the prison and we were told that some prisoners tried to escape.
“We are all afraid. So it’s hard to go near and ask for the details, ’’ the source said.(NAN)
