Ikotun-Egbe residents groan under bad roads

BY DONALD ARJI

LAGOS – Residents of Ikotun-Egbe in Alimosho Local Government of Lagos State are grumbling over alleged lack of roads among other social amenities in the area.

The residents who spoke to Vangaurd under the aegis of Alimosho People’s Assembly, APA, alleged that they had been having challenges of poor road network in the last five years, saying that several appeals to Governor Babtunde Fashola to come their rescue have fell on deaf ears.

Spokesman for APA, Chief Jimoh Ajibola said the Ijegun-Ikotun-Cele express and the Isheri-Jakande Estate roads which were the major roads through which the residents could travel to the Lagos mainland or Badagry were unmotorable, pointing out that the worst part of Ikoun- Cele express road was the stretch between Oke-Affa Bridge and Ejigbo just as the whole stetch of Isheri- Jakande Estate road was impassable.

His words, “we have been complaing about these roads since the days of Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu as governor of the state. When Mr Babatunde Fashola took over, we thought the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN-led administration would listen to us by giving us good roads and water but these problems have remained unresolved.

“The ACN prides itself as the main opposition party but it is not living up to its billing in the provision of democracy dividends.

“Each time we complain about the bad area of the road at Ejigbo, we are told that it is a joint project between the Federal Government and its Lagos State counterpart. But why would the government wait for people in Abuja to solve a simple problem of road construction that is less than 20 kilometres, when the area is densely populated and also the major areas where the government gets block votes.

“Those in government only remember us during elections, when they come to make false promises and disappear after such elections.

“Those celebrating the 1,800 days of elitist government of Fashola should remind him that Alimosho residents are suffering in the midst of plenty.

“Is it the people from Aso Rock in Abuja that pass through these bad roads or Lagosians? Why did they come to ask us for votes when they know that the road belongs to both Lagos and Abuja? They have been making noise about Fashola’s achievements in other areas but silent on what he has done for us.

“The Ejigbo LCDA is even worse in terms of non-performance as far as we are concerned because, all they do is to drop names of their god-fathers instead of attending to the needs of those who voted them into power.’’
