Nigerians from different walks of life have reacted to President Goodluck Jonathan’s s perceived econd tenure bid. While some were of the opinion that he should be given a chance to perform, others are saying that this present administration is suffering many challenges which he has not been able to control. Sothere is no guarantee that he will do better if given the second chance. These are some of the opinions Saturday Vanguard gathered.
Let him work — Joachim Madu
As we all can see, he is not capable. In this administration, we have been experiencing many challenges unlike before, so how can he think about coming for the second time when he has not completed the first tenure successfully? If I may say, there are loop-holes in every sector of his administration.
Let’s talk about the security challenges in his administration, as you can see, ever since he assumed the position of the number one citizen of the country, there have been constant bombings in the country killing Nigerians.
There is no water supply, among others. He even promised to improve our energy which he has not done justice to. Talking about the subsidy, he has the right to bring to book the so called cabals who have been enjoying the subsidy money but I don’t think he will have the courage to do that because most members of the cabals are his friends and he respects them a lot.
I will advise him to wake up and do his work as the president of the country. Because as the president , he is the chief security officer of the country and he is supposed to do his possible best to ensure the safety of life and properties in the country. He should do something to stop the menace meted to this country by terrorists. He should improve in all the aspects of his administration.
I support him because it is our turn —Friday Okwuobasi
I am a Nigerian but by God’s grace before the year runs off, I will change my citizenship. Jonathan is a good leader but it is just that the people would not allow him to be. If you consider his administration with the past ones, you will notice that there is mass employment of people than the previous administration. When he newly assumed the position, he was performing very well put because of the pressure on him, he suddenly changed.
The problems in Nigerian cannot just be eradicated by Jonathan in just one tenure, he needs to be given an enabling environment to perform. I have spent up to 19 years in Ivory Coast with my family, I have never experienced interrupted power supply or water supply but we cannot celebrate a day here in Nigeria without power interruption. These things are not what Jonathan can solve under one tenure.
The former administration of Obasanjo spent 8 years in office without eradicating these problems, so how can we expect Jonathan to just solve the problems under 4 years? It is not possible. What I know is that Nigeria is very big for one person to handle especially, when other people that are supposed to help the administration to move fine are not doing their work. I could remember there was a time in Ivory Coast when they were having problem with their former President, Gbagbo, it was Jonathan who helped in resolving the problem. So I like him because he is a peace loving man.
They should stop blaming Jonathan. Ever since I was born, there has never been improvement in Nigeria instead, we have been recording problems. Things have never been steady in this country and it is not Jonathan’s fault. He will not kill himself because he is ruling Nigeria. What did other administrations achieve?
The issue of insecurity, I have nothing much to say about that one. There have been several bombings and mass killings just because a South-Southerner, is the president. If the president was to come from the North, I know we would not have been witnessing what is going on now. They should just allow the man to be.
He should continue — Chima Amobi
I support Jonathan to go for the second term if he wants to go because, he is God’s sent but the forces behind his administration are too much for him. The way he won the election goes a long way to tell us that God really wants him to rule the country. Almost the whole Nigerians supported and voted him because they know what he can do, they know his capabilities but forces behind him are much.
If you check out the removal of the fuel subsidy, you will know that he has good intentions for the country. If he can properly implement the money that was realized from the fuel subsidy, we the Nigerians will smile again. Can you imagine how few Nigerians are embezzling such huge amounts of money that can be used for other infrastructural development and improve on our transport system which he said he is going to work on with the money realized from subsidy?
I believe if they give him the chance and enough time, he will perform well. In the area of insecurity, he is trying his best. You don’t expect him to kill himself; he is doing what he is supposed to do so we should not blame him. They should please allow him to be. Those people that are complaining about Jonathan’s administration are indirectly looking for a way to frustrate his government. I pray God to give him the courage and strength to do his job without fear or favour.
I know he can deal with the cabal if he is given the chance but there are some people in his administration who are among the cabal that would not want the cabal to be dealt with. Gradually, our government will return to normal, that’s my belief.
He has no grip on the polity — Ade Oye
He has not been effective especially, on the issue of corruption. He has not taken a bold step towards tackling that problem. He should be able to ensure the lives and properties of Nigerians because; several Nigerians are dying every day in the hands of terrorists. He should be able to fetch these people out and deal with them before talking about coming for a second tenure. As a good leader, he should be able to have the courage to tackle problems without fear. He cannot say he does not know the sponsors of these bombings.
He should deal with the sponsors so that the people carrying out the act will cool down. He should forget about what will be the outcome if the sponsors are eventually arrested.
On the issue of the fuel subsidy, he has not shown enough courage in tackling the problem, rather; he keeps on shifting blames to people. He should work more on power supply and create enabling environment for entrepreneurs. People have lost confidence in him and there is no way he can win if the people have no trust and confidence in him. Days are gone when Nigerians vote party.
Now they vote individuals. Look at what happened in Imo State where the people voted for their conscience. He should work hard to discard the bad confidence people have on him before talking about second tenure.
Talking about the subsidy, I think he is scared to deal with them because he thinks those people are more powerful than him which is not supposed to be like that. So he should work more and not thinking about second tenure for now.
