PAC lauds IG over highway patrol

LAGOS — The decision by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to introduce 24–hour motorised highway patrol nationwide, yesterday, has received commendation from the Police Assistance Committee,PAC.

PAC also commended the police boss on the gains recorded so far following the removal of check-points from the roads.

At a seminar in Lagos for state coordinators of PAC, Director-General of the organisation, Dr. Martins Oni, said the decision of the IGP to cancel checkpoints and roadblocks has brought sanity into the nation’s security system as being witnessed in recent times.

Oni, who just returned from Dallas, Texas,USA, where he led PAC members to attend a security conference, noted that the action of the IGP was similar to what obtained in the U.S., where the police are only positioned at strategic places to monitor people and vehicular movements to checkmate crime, rather than mounting roadblocks unnecessarily.

The PAC boss advised the IGP not to succumb to returning police checkpoints, but rather, emulate the system that operates abroad where police men are stationed strategically to monitor movements of people and vehicles.

He noted that the decision of the IGP to introduce 24 – hour motorized highway patrol on Nigerian roads as well as the introduction of Rapid Response Structure to compliment the highway patrol was highly commendable.
