By By Evelyn Usman and Chinedu Ibeabuchi
A barman, identified as prince, 26years, killed one of his customers, Idoko John who came to watch the match between Chelsea and Barcelona in his bar, Tuesday night, at Shasha-Akowonjo, a suburb of Lagos State.

Vanguard gathered that trouble began when some football fans besieged the bar, known as Cheesebay along Boundary Street of the area, to watch the match but were dissatisfied with the condition the bar man gave before they could be allowed entrance.

A resident of the area, names withheld, recounted that the bar man was said to have told interested viewers to buy at least a bottle of drink each before they could be admitted into the bar.

“The victim, John, bought a yoghurt but got angry when he was told by the bar man to go out since he couldn’t buy a bottle of beer.

Out of annoyance, the deceased and other fans were alleged to have started destroying properties in the bar. Prince had to seek self defense by using a chisel to fight back. In the process, he was alleged to have hit a chisel into John’s neck. John slumped and died instantly with blood gushing out profusely,” he said.

Vanguard gathered that the barman immediately rushed to Afonka Police Station to report the tragedy, though he didn’t announce he killed someone. He absconded afterwards.

Another  report stated that a  fight  broke out between fans of Barcelona and Chelsea football clubs  same Tuesday night at a viewing centre  in Shasha area of Lagos, resulting in the death of one person.

Report said the victim, John Idoko was stabbed to death during an argument which degenerated into a fight, over Barcelona’s loss at the end of  second leg champion’s league semi final in Spain

23-year-old Idoko as gathered, would have survived the attack had help come on time. Rather, his friends were said to have engaged his opponents in a free-for -all during  which dangerous weapons were  reportedly used.

On noticing he was still, they all reportedly fled ,  abandoning him.

Spokesperson for the  Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, who confirmed the incident, could however not state which of the clubs the deceased  was in support of.

Said he: “On Tuesday, around 10pm, a report reached Shasha Police Division that one John Idoko was stabbed to death with a broken bottle during a match between Chelsea and Barcelona Football Clubs.

“The owner of the pub said almost all her properties were damaged during the fight as the fans went crazy. No arrests have been made as witnesses have refused to come forward but investigations are ongoing.”
