Port Harcourt: ONE person was feared dead when about eight heavily armed robbers stormed a first generation bank close to a campus of the University of Port Harcourt in Choba area of Rivers State at about 8pm on Wednesday.

Some students of the university who witnessed the ugly development said the robbers shot their way into the bank.

Another source said the robbers blew up safes in the bank with dynamites and carted away undisclosed sums of money.

The ugly development caused pandemonium in the area as motorists and passersby scampered for safety.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ben Ugwuegbulem who confirmed the incident said police were on the trail of the robbers, expressing the hope that they would soon be arrested.  He said he was aware one person sustained injury and was receiving treatment at a hospital but  could not confirm if anybody died or say if the casualty was a staff of the bank.

Vanguard gathered that some staff of the bank were still trying to balance their records for the day when the robbers struck. None of them were willing to comment on the incident when Vanguard visited the bank after the incident.
