Controversy is trailing recent levies announced by the Ekiti State University, EKSU which is causing tension in the institution. Already, the state government has denied giving approval for outrageous levy and vowed to get to root of the issue.

The management of the school had, last Friday, in a paid advertisement by the Registrar of the university, Dr Omojola Awosusi, announced a new regime of school levies to be paid by the students which ranged from N93,000 to N191,500 depending on the faculty.

It will be recalled that the state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at his inauguration pegged school fee to be paid by every student of the institution to N50,000.

For instance, in Faculty of Engineering, some of the miscellaneous fees introduced by the university include registration and examination N2,500, library N1,500, sports N5,000, health centre N7,500, GST N1,500, ID card N1,500, caution N2,500, verification N2,500, matriculation N2,000 and convocation N2,000.

Others are IT supervision N10,000, M.I.S N2,000, laboratory workshop N5,000, professional fee N10,000, equipment N5,000,  faculty/department due N10,000 and handbook N1,000, totaling N122,000.

The publication, however, exempted both 400 and 500 levels students from the new levies. Meantime, the state government has disowned the management of the university over the new levies.

According to the announcement made by the state government through the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Eniola Ajayi, the state government declared its commitment to making education affordable for the students.
Government, however, promised to investigate the rationale for the new levies.
