As Lagos residents were making last minute preparations on New Year’s Eve to usher in2012, tragedy struck again, when a two-storey building, under construction, collapsed in  Oshodi Local Government Area of  Lagos State killing three persons.

Several other persons also sustained varying degrees of injuries. The condition of three of  the wounded persons could not be immediately ascertained as they were said to be in the Intensive Care Unit of an undisclosed hospital.

Report said those affected were construction workers and food vendors.  The artisans were said to have taken the day off with the hope of resuming work, Sunday. Unfortunately, the unexpected happened while some of them were sleeping on the slab.

Rescue work by residents of Popoola Olafuyi Street, began immediately, as they succeeded in bringing one person out of the debris, before the arrival of officials of the Lagos State Emergency Agency LASEMA and, the Lagos State Fire Service and policemen.

One the rescued victim, named Ishola , had bruises all over his hands and shoulder, with blood stained cloth, unable to speak, just pointed at the rubble, indicating that his colleagues were still under the debris.

It was learnt that telephone calls were received from those trapped as they were said to have made passionate appeal for help. One of them whose name was given as Baba Afeez was said to have requested for water.

Rescue work continued as at press time with relatives of some of the victims seen wailing. Eye witnesses said victims were still trapped under the rubble.
