Families petition agency over Onokpite’s killing

WARRI – THE Onokpite and Ighomrore families of Okpe and Uvwie local government areas of Delta State, Monday, petitioned the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, over the killing of Chief Ogbe Onokpite.

This is coming against the backdrop of the call on the state police command to clear itself in the alleged extra-judicial murder of Onokpite.

Commissioner for Information, Mr Chike Ogeah, at a news conference yesterday absolved the government and Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan from blame over the alleged murder, saying, ‘’As far as I know, I am a lawyer and I know our judicial process has matured to the extent that I can assure you that this kind of thing cannot go away like that.”

Onokpite, who was the former gubernatorial candidate of the Citizens Popular Party, CPP, in the April 26 governorship elections in Delta State was allegedly killed by the police on November 26.

Solicitor to the family, Mr. Festus Keyamo, claimed in his petition, dated December 12, to the Secretary of the Commission, that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, who he earlier directed the petition to, had abandoned the matter.
