Enugu approves N4bn road contracts

ENUGU— Enugu State government has approved the award of contracts to the tune of over N4 billion for the construction of four major roads in parts of the State.

Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke,who announced this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, said the break down of the amount showed that over N1.8 billion was for the construction of Nguru – Ede Oballa – Eha Alumona road, while over N988 million was approved for the construction of Igogoro Amachalla – Ugbaike –road.

Ugwoke explained that the two major roads, the 10.3 kilometre Igogoro – Obollo Afor road on completion, will link the popular Nsukka– Ibagwa Ogurute Ahi – Ette road while the Nguru – Eha-Alumona road, an entirely virgin road that will open up the area.

Other roads are Zik Avenue Phase II awarded to Borini Prono Company Nigeria Limited at a contract sum of over N1.5 billion and the Nara – Isiogbo road project awarded at a total sum of N286,692,000.

According to the Commissioner, the Zik Avenue Phase II road project will start from where the Arab Contractors stopped at Ziks Avenue railway line crossing to Egbuna Roundabout on Ogui Road including a new twin bridge across the Asata River.

Also the Nara – Isiogbo road project will include the replacement of lateratic base course on the road with stone base course to raise its level by 300milimeters.

Ugwoke further said that the government has approved the sum of N113,421,742 for the execution of some projects at the State Judiciary Complex.

According to Mr. Ugwoke, the project which will be executed through direct labour will include building of two court rooms with a mini-cell, two judges chambers, two offices for the judges support staff and a multi purpose hall for ceremonies.

He said that the council also approved the relocation and reconstruction of two buildings marked for demolition at the 305 Flying Training School of the Nigeria Airforce Base, Emene, Enugu.

The two buildings housing the Library/Hall and Administrative blocks of the school are to be demolished to make way for the construction work at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Emene, Enugu.

The government, the commissioner added, had also approved the payment of the state’s counterpart fund of N367,914,545 for this year’s MDG conditional grant scheme that will address challenges in the health and water sectors.
