CNPP, labour, CSOs’ issue 7-point charter on subsidy

By Chris Ochayi

ABUJA – Oppositions to the proposed removal of fuel subsidy by President Goodluck Jonathan, weekend, reached a frightening level as political parties, civil society groups and the organised labour unions formed an alliance against it.

National Publicity Secretary of Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, in a statement on behalf of the alliance, issued President Jonathan a seven-point charter on why he must jettison the proposal.

Mr. Okechukwu said: “The seven-point charter is the communiqué of an extensive meeting last night (Saturday) in Abuja between the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, and Civil Society Organisations.”

Part of seven-point charter read: “Build new refineries; if you don’t have confidence that Nigerians can manage refineries, we don’t have confidence that you can manage the withdrawal proceeds.

“Stop the rampant corruption in fuel importation before removing the fuel subsidy.

“If you can’t stop the rampant corruption in fuel importation, you cannot guarantee the proceeds to be withdrawn.”
