LAGOS: The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) on Monday appealed to the Lagos State Government to reverse the recent fee increment at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

In a statement signed by its Lagos State Chairman, Mr Ehi Omokhuale, the CLO said that the new school fees would be detrimental to the state.

“If it is not reversed, the tuition increment will lead to another major students’ uprising and a further retrogression in the state’s education sector,” the CLO said in the statement.

It described the fee increment  as outrageous and inhuman and called on all well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Lagos State Government to have a rethink on the issue.

“Forcing un-affordable fees on the students and their poor parents was not one of the pre-election campaign promises of Gov. Babatunde Fashola.

According to the CLO, the state is capable of funding LASU’s planned infrastructural development through cutting down on the cost of governance.

“The state’s yearly internal revenue of about N20 billion will go a long way,” it further stated.

The CLO pointed out that providing qualitative education was a responsibility of the government. (NAN)
