Chad woos Nigeria over ECOWAS membership

By Daniel Idonor
Abuja— Chad has urged Nigeria to support its bid to join the Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS. It has also enjoined Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger leaders to join forces to tackle security challenges around the Lake Chad region.

President Idris Derby, who spoke to journalists after holding talks with President Jonathan at the State House yesterday, said the discussion was on the need for link road, rail infrastructure and the banking sector.

Speaking through an interpreter, the visiting Chadian leader said: “The reason for my presence here is to see my brother, President Goodluck Jonathan. It is a working and friendship visit.

“We took the opportunity of the meeting to overview the different aspects of our bilateral cooperation. We focused on the theme of economy, security, trade and international issues.”
