Alleged exam malpractice: Rep denies complicity

Umuahia- THE member representing Isuikwuato/Umenneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has denied allegations of examination malpractice levelled against her.

It will be recalled that Miss Chetachi Obi, an aide to the lawmaker, was last Thursday, arrested by the police at a NABTEB examination centre in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

It was alleged that Obi was nabbed by a team of detectives from Abia State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Umuahia for impersonating Onyejeocha. She had since denied sitting for any examination for her mistress.

Obi had said that she went to the examination venue to answer a call from an anonymous person, when she was arrested.

Meanwhile, a press statement signed by Mr Jasper Uche, media aide to the lawmaker, described the allegation as unfounded.

The statement added that the allegation was a calculated attempt by Onyejeocha’s detractors to “discredit and pull her down from her position as a federal lawmaker.”

It stated that Onyejeocha, a holder of Masters Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy, had no business entering for the NABTEB examination, as alleged.

A Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, made available to newsmen indicated that Onyejeocha got her West African School Certificate, WASC, in 1984.

The WASC was obtained from Ovim Girls Secondary School, Isuikwuato, Abia State.

“In 1994, she was mobilised to Osun for the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1988,” the release stated.

It challenged people in doubt to verify the facts “using the instrumentality of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act”.

The statement wondered what Onyejeocha, “who had attained such enviable heights would be doing with a NABTEB examination”.

According to the statement, the lawmaker had in the past served as a Commissioner in Abia and also as an Executive Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government Council of the state.

Meanwhile, Mr Joseph Mcloth, Assistant Commissioner of Police (CID), confirmed the incident, and said that investigation into the matter had commenced.
