Enyimba of Aba coach, Okey Emordi has revealed why he resigned from the club, after a fruitless chase for continental and local titles in the 2010/2011 League season.
Emordi, on Monday officially handed the club chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu his resignation letter ending a three-year contract with the six-time Nigerian champions. In 2009 Emordi made a dramatic return to the team he took to their second CAF Champions League triumph in 2004. Emordi, guided Enyimba to a seventh finish at the just concluded 2010/2011 NPL season and semifinals of the 2011 CAF Champions League losing to Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club.
According to him, “Resigning is not the appropriate word to use but disengagement of services . We have come to the end of the season, and eventually everybody is looking for a better place to be. And I wanted a situation where I will be close to my family,” Emordi began.
“I do not want a situation where I will be far from my family. Really, it was good working with Enyimba. As one is getting old, one can equally think of getting closer to his home. I’m not saying my home is far from Aba but the roads are not too good to be on always. In fact, I have served the club to the best of my ability and they have equally done their best for me.
The decision is personal. It is glaring that Enyimba did not do well last season. Naturally, nobody knows what would happen in the future if I continue with the club. I do not think the management is sad about it. They have been a good family to me, so I do not think there is any problem about it.
When asked about his next move he said, “for now, there is no destination , the issue is that, I just want to have a break and look at the past season. I want to reflect on our successes and failures and then try to make amends. I am not a resident coach in Enyimba, my job is based on contract. So If I have to move it will be to get a permanent job and by God’s grace I will get,”.
Despite his disengagement from the club, Emordi believes that the club will do well in the next season if things are put in order.
“ Enyimba, have been a good club since its inception, and they will go places next season if everything is put in order . Starting from the management to the players. Whether we like it or not there is nothing one does without motivation , so many things have to be done properly if they must succeed next season,” he concluded .
