A member of the technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Christian Chukwu has tipped newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi to succeed with the team.
Chukwu believes Keshi’s experience as a player who represented his country at the highest level and a coach of many years will rob off on the team.
“Keshi has been there before. He has the experience first as a player and as a top level coach for many years. He is matured and I believe he will deliver. It is a good appointment,” Chukwu said.
The former coach of the national team said the NFF would give Keshi a free hand to select his assistants. “We will give him the same level of support we gave to Siasia. We want him to succeed. He will choose his assistants. That is how it is done. It is the only way you can guarantee loyalty and they will also know that when things go wrong and Oga(the boss) goes, all of them will go”.
Chukwu said Keshi would use the forthcoming international friendly matches against Botswana and Zambia to see the players first hand and assess them. “The coach had no hand in the invitation of players for the two friendlies. But the technical committee did a very good job. We expect the new coach to use the matches to know his players”.
Keshi is also expected to find good Nigerian based players who will form part of the post Siasia Eagles. “The coach has to go round our league venues and discover players who can make the national team. Our home-based players must be in the Eagles. I don’t believe in the invitation of 30 players all from foreign leagues. We will require him to raise a home-based team that will form the nucleus of the new Eagles”.
