Nigerian international singer and song-writer , Asa, will be the star guest of this weekend’s CNN African Voices sponsored by leading telecom operator, Globacom.
A statement by the company’s Marketing Communications Department said the decision to feature Asa is in line with the philosophy of the programme to showcase successful and high-profile personalities who are shaping the African continent.
“Asa is one of Africa’s brightest musical stars and is rapidly becoming a household name around the world. We are, therefore, delighted to bring her to millions of viewers across the globe,” Globacom stated.
The 30-minute programme will be on air on Saturday at11.30 a.m., with repeat broadcasts at 4.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. There will be further repeats at 2.30 a.m., 10 a.m., and 7.30 p.m. on Sunday, at 11.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. on Monday, and at 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Born Bukola Elemide in Paris, France, to Nigerian parents, Asa was two years old when her family returned to live in Lagos, Nigeria. However, twenty years later she returned to Paris, which is where her life as an artist blossomed. She had the chance to test out her talent on the French musical scene, playing with artists such as the Les Nubians, Manu Dibango, Doctor L and Tony Allen.
Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, her first single, Eyé Adaba, then Jailer, were beginning to get airtime.
MTV chose her as the ambassador for South Africa. She became so hugely popular that she opened for Akon, John Legend, Beyoncé and Snoop Dogg amongst others at shows. She has also collaborated with well known Nigerian artists such as 9ice and Tuface.
