FG injects N33billion into higher education – Minister

BY GBENGA OLARINOYE, OSOGBO

Federal Government has injected over N33billion through the Education Trust Fund (ETF) as special intervention into 13 tertiary institutions across the country.

The beneficiaries of the intervention fund were however not named.

The Minister of Education Professor Ruqquayyatu Rufai who disclosed this at the 7th convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, said the Federal Government demonstrated its commitment to quality education by equally injecting 150Million US Dollars and taking an international Development Association (IDA) credit from World Bank for Science and Technology Education Post Basic (STEP-B) projects.

She noted that without quality tertiary education, the nation’s quest for qualitative human capital development would be a mirage.

Also, at the occasion, the State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, said polytechnic education had been controversial and unstable and noted however, that nobody could deny the huge contribution of polytechnic education to manpower development.

He said “it is regrettable that the debate on parity with university graduates and the general competition with universities has overshadowed the greater issue of the relevance and importance of polytechnics”.
