BENIN CITY-EDO State Government, Tuesday, vowed to commence legal action against hospitality business operators who have failed to register with the state’s Board of Internal Revenue as enshrined in the Consumption Tax Law which was signed into law in June 2011.
He said this in Benin City when the Board rewarded some owners of hotels, restaurants and eateries, who commenced payment of the five per cent consumer tax, adding that those who were yet to comply have contravened the law which stated that they must register with the state government 30 days from the day the law was signed.
Chairman of the Board, Mr. Oseni Elama said: “The House of Assembly has made this law even when they don’t agree, a law has been made. Government has a responsibility not only just to make law but to demonstrate that they have the capacity to enforce the laws they have made. They have gone to court but that has not stopped us from enforcing the law until something else happens.”
