ABUJA—The drive to eradicate the wild polio virus in Nigeria may have suffered a set back, going by revelations yesterday that the spread of the virus recorded a four-fold increase in 2011.
Acting Executive Director, National Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr Emmanuel Abanida, speaking in Abuja at the 22nd Expert Review Committee, ERC, on Polio and Routine Immunization in Nigeria, said the spread of wild polio virus declined by 95% in 2010, compared to 2011.
He said: “Nigeria registered 95% decline in polio virus transmission in 2010 compared to 2011. There has not been similar level of progress in 2011.
“There has been four fold increases in wild polio virus transmission in 2011 compared to similar period in 2010.
